Advanced Typography/Task 1_Exercises: Typographic Systems & Type and Play

LECTURES:
Week 01 Introduction
Today is the first class of Advanced Typography. This course is the advanced mode of semester one Typography, so our lecture don't take too much time for introduce this course but still having brief of Module Information Booklet. After that, we been told to start our task 1, exercise 1, Typographic system.

Typographic Systems have been grouped by 8 systems
  1. Axial
  2. Radial
  3. Dilatational
  4. Random
  5. Grid
  6. Transitional
  7. Modular
  8. Bilateral
Week 02 Type & Play/Part 1: Finding Type
On this second week, we hve been taught to make a selection of image between man-made objects (chair, glass, etc.) or structures (buildings) , and nature (Huma, landscape, leaf, plant, bush, clouds, hill, river, etc).

We are going to analyse, dissect and indentify potential letterforms within the dissected image. The forms would be explored and ultimately digitized. It is expected that through a process if iteration the forms would go from crude representation to a more refined celebration that would reflect to a degree its origins.

Week 03 Checking on Progress of Type & Play/Part 1

Week 04 Last Checking on Progress of Type & Play/Part 1 and Checking on Type & Play/Part 2

    First Outcome:

    Fig 2.6 First Outcome

For this first outcome, my transitional and bilateral were still in progress.
Feedback: Overall is good, but for dilatational system, the graphic element is too strong.

After having adjustments, these are my final outcome:

    Type & Play
    Part 1: Finding Type

    Selected Image:

    Fig 3.1 Selected Image

From the requirements, we were required to choose an object picture. But cause of lacking ideas, I had choosen a graphic picture instead of object picture and Sir said it is fine.

    Fig 3.3 First Showcase

For my refering typeface it will be Futura Std.

Fig 3.4 Matching with Futura Std

    Fig 3.5 First Outcome

Feedback: Need to determine a style from one word then apply to all words.

    So I found out that:
-left rectangle is thinner than right
-have some cut/angle on top or bottom of word

and these are my next outcomes:

    Fig 3.6 Second Outcome

    Fig 3.7 Third Outcome

Feedback: The third outcome is good but the cutting need to be at the same line

    Fig 3.8 Fourth Outcome

This is my fourth outcome and also my final outcome

    Type & Play
    Part 2: Type & Image

    Fig 4.1 Original Image

    Fig 4.2 First Outcome

    Feedback: Too simple

    Fig 4.3 Second Outcome

Feedback: The word looks fake and this task is match the word with the image and let the word feels like it is actually there.

    Fig 4.4 New Selected Image

As I found out it is difficult to match words with the first selected image,  so I decided to choose a new image.
